Sean Penn Set to Receive Hollywood Humanitarian Award

Sean Penn will be receiving the “Hollywood Humanitarian Award” at the Hollywood Film Festival’s Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony for his “incredible selfless and dedicated humanitarian efforts in saving lives” and in “bringing relief to the human suffering in Haiti,” the organizers say.

Sean is scheduled to receive the prestigious award on October 25th. Previous recipients of the award have been Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams and the President of East Timor, Jose Ramos Horta.

“It is an honor to recognize the inspiring humanitarian efforts that Sean Penn and his J/P Haitian Relief Organization have been providing to the great people of Haiti,” Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival, said in a statement.

Recently, Sean Penn and Wyclef Jean found themselves in an all out war of words when Wyclef announced that he was interested in running for Haitian president. Sean didn’t hold back on his criticism towards Jean saying in an article he wrote for The Huffington Post which stated, ““I was there for those 6 months after the earthquake and so many of us on the ground wondered where [Jean] was when that kind of [media] attention was so necessary and absent, and why he was NOT helping to keep this desperate situation in the news.”

Wyclef replied that he thought that Penn must have been too busy to see him following the devastation in Haiti, accusing him of being “too busy snorting cocaine.” Jean has since dropped his candidacy for Haitian president.

Sean Penn has been a big vocal political activist who co-founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization and helped run a 55,000 person tent camp after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Penn was also there to help rebuild the city.

So, Celebstalkers, what do you think about Sean Penn winning Hollywood’s Humanitarian Award?
